about the primary

What's a Primary Election?
Political parties use primary elections to choose their candidates for the general election.
Generally, you must be registered with either the Democratic or Republican Party to vote in the primary election. If you are "unaffiliated" with any political party, you will only be able to vote in nonpartisan elections held in your jurisdiction.
